Kleftiko Beach is located on the Milos, a Greek island just north of Crete. It's not a traditional beach with sand, but rather a cluster of white rock formations that create beautiful caves and just above the turquoise water. Because it is so far away from civilization, Kleftiko Beach boasts crystal clear water (that only the Mediterranean has), through which you can see all kinds of sea life swimming through the caves. In fact, legend says that the pirates of the Cyclades Islands used to hide inside the caves at Kleftiko Beach, thus giving it its name (which translates to Pirate's Lair).

Like any secluded beach worth visiting, Kleftiko Beach is only accessible by boat or a 45 minute hike. If going for the easier option, there are endless tour companies that offer boat trips to Kleftiko Beach from Adamas Port, the largest town on Milos. The cruises can last from 6 to 9 hours, and there are many types of boats (including yachts for those inclined to luxury).

If you're more adventurous, Kleftiko is accessible from the land, although it involves a hike. First, you should drive a car (there are many car rental companies on Milos and renting a car in Greece is very cheap) to the southwest corner of Milos. If you're driving from Adamas, here is a map of the route

Follow the road until you reach the Monastery of St. John Sideriano (a big white monastery with a large car park). Park in this lot and continue walking on the road until you see a sign pointing to Kleftiko Beach. From there, a trail takes you down the mountain to the beach (this part takes 35-45 minutes). Remember to wear good hiking shoes, because it's not a smooth walk down. Eventually you'll reach the beach, hot and ready to swim!

Once you're there, there are a number of activities to try, including jumping off the cliffs into the water, exploring the caves, sunbathing on the rocks, snorkeling (you can rent a snorkel in Adamas), and of course, swimming in the unbelievably clear water. Make sure to take some snacks, lots of water, and sunscreen, and enjoy your time at one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
