Film Bros Criticize Marvel Fans For Dismissing Foreign Movies

This discourse sprouted yesterday when a Twitter user named Cleo posted several screenshots from TikToks made by Marvel fans joking about the types of movies they like versus the kinds Film Bros enjoy.

Cleo's proposition sparked dialogue about whether adults who are self-righteous about only being interested in commercially successful entertainment are correct in their criticisms of so-called Film Bros. One user questioned what a "Film Bro" truly means to those proud of only liking popular movies.

Colloquially, "Film Bro" has been used to describe arrogant and condescending men who think they know much about cinema but have very conventional taste in widely watched movies. People often cite Joker or Pulp Fiction as quintessential Film Bro movies. However, in the case of these TikToks, "Film Bro" is used to describe movie fans as a whole, citing fans of non-English films as inherently pretentious and annoying.

Although Film Bros are discussed at length online, they are rarer than you'd think. If only listening to the discourse, you would think they're everywhere, lurking behind every corner. It is interesting that Film Bros are such bonafide objects of contempt by fans of media that dominates popular culture.

Some posters agreed with Cleo that they'd love to see a movie about the Serbian government from the point of view of a pigeon and were met with a fortunate surprise.

In the real world outside of Twitter, the kind of media you watch is not a moral stance. It might inform some of your cultural references, but it has way less bearing on who you are than you'd gather from being online. In this era, media consumption itself is perceived as a stance. If you watch black and white foreign films, you're pretentious and condescending. If you watch kid's movies and superhero flicks, you're an ignorant rube. In actuality, none of this is true. There can be value in watching something a little out of your comfort zone and not immediately dismissing everything unfamiliar as boring or not worth engaging. But then again, you don't have to; it's just a movie.
