The Quirimbas Archipelago consists of 32 islands just off the coast of Tanzania. You'll want to head to the main island, Ibo Island, and arrange boat trips to the other islands from there. An amazing combination of Portuguese, Indian, African and Swahili cultures and languages exist on the tiny island, a legacy left behind by centuries of occupation by different peoples.

However, the real treasure of the Quirimbas Archipelago lies in its many secluded and often deserted islands. If you're seeking a real adventure, nothing beats having a whole island to yourself to explore, or sleeping in a tiny hut like the locals.

Once you get to Ibo Island from Pemba (see the recommended routes here), it's time to decide which islands to visit. Eleven of the 32 islands are part of the Quirimbas National Park, and they uphold strict measures for protecting the environment there. That means that the islands and surrounding water are pristine and unpolluted which makes for great snorkeling and diving conditions.

If you're after a luxury experience, Medjumbe Island, Vamizi Island, and Quilalea Island are all private islands owned by the luxury resorts on the islands. Those going for the cheaper option should opt for day trips or overnight stays in small huts on other islands, where you get an authentic local experience. Check out Matemo Island or Quirimba Island. Both islands are sparsely populated by local Mozambicans. Now that's the real island experience.

The Quirimbas Archipelago is the perfect destination for travelers seeking beaches that are off the beaten track. This collection of tiny islands is still largely undiscovered by the rest of the world, and this shows in the island's unspoiled beauty.
