New Chums Beach is one of the many beautiful beaches in New Zealand. Located in Wainuiototo Bay, its closest city is Auckland. New Chums Beach is only accessible by boat or by a 30 minute walk on an unformed track through bushland. Because of the abundance of beaches in the area, and the relative inaccessibility, New Chums Beach is a hidden gem that rarely sees people.

The beach stretches for 1 km (0.6 miles) and is one of the only undeveloped beaches in the area. Developers have attempted to build 20 houses, a boatshed and a ramp near the beach, but locals vehemently resisted, leaving the serene beach and surrounding bushland in peace.

If you're driving to New Chums Beach, Whangapoua is the closest town to it. Once you arrive to Whangapoua, drive to the end of Mangakahia Drive where you'll find a car park. You can leave your car here and start walking north along the sand (in the same direction you were driving in). Cross the stream (2 hours before and after low tide is best) and continue walking over the rocks for 10 minutes. Take the path to the left, continue walking parallel to the ocean. Then follow the track over the crest (where you'll see an incredible birds eye view of the beach) and continue down to the beach.

Remember to take as much water and food that you'll need, and don't leave any rubbish lying around - kiwi birds have enough problems without accidentally eating plastic.

Once you're at New Chums Beach, you can swim, sunbathe, and try to spot some dolphins. Make sure to head back to your car well before sunset as it's an unmarked track, which will be almost impossible to see in the dark. New Chums Beach is one of the few undeveloped beaches left in New Zealand, and you can really feel the magic of nature there.
