There has always been a double-standard for girls and boys when it comes to dress-codes. In every student handbook, there are about ten pages reserved for girls: No bra straps showing, no skirts above the pinky finger, no collarbones, no leggings, no backs showing — I could easily go on for several paragraphs.
When you finally get to the boy section: No swear words on shirts, no hats... and that's basically the extent of it.
I was under the impression that school systems were changing and people were finally understanding how unfair it is to put the responsibility on the girls to make sure the boys don't get 'distracted.' But apparently we're still not there yet. And, apparently, it's not just the students who find it distracting. Ew.
17-year-old Karis, a student from Kamloops, British Columbia was ordered to go home because a teacher was uncomfortable with her clothing, and decided she was a distraction. If you look at her outfit, although her dress is bodycon, she is covered from neck to knee, which definitely is not how anyone dresses to the club. It definitely seems work appropriate though to me. Unfortunately, her teacher found it way too stimulating. Again... EW!
Karis's supportive father responded to the incident by making a video for Facebook.
"This is unacceptable. We shouldn't treat our females like this. We shouldn't be telling them they can't dress a certain way. This is absurd."
He also recognized the unsettling reality that it was of course MALE teachers who deemed her outfit distracting. Maybe you shouldn't be working in a school if you're so easily distracted by minors...
We STAN a supportive father!
