The 1920s was a new era of women wearing makeup daily. They lined their lips to look smaller than they were naturally and made them look like cupid's bow. Red lips were the preference, and ivory skin with rosy pink cheeks was the optimum look.

In the 1930s, women became influenced by Hollywood stars. That meant pancake foundation and pencil thin eyebrows. Red lipstick was still the preference.

Much of the 1940s was spent in war, so makeup and beauty products were hard to get. Some women substituted makeup alternatives, like beetroot juice for lipstick, but women of the 40s tended to go for a natural look.

The 1950s saw a rise in pastel makeup colors: blue, green, yellow and pink were the most popular colors. Marilyn Monroe made big eyelashes popular, with full eyebrows with a highly defined arch.

1960s makeup was largely influenced by Twiggy, who popularized thick winged eyeliner, false eyelashes and concealer under the eyes. Lipstick was replaced with nude lips.

In the 1970s, a bronzed complexion became desired and women began using bronzers and pearl powders on the cheekbones. Shimmer eyeshadow and clear lip gloss were used to give a dewy look.

The 1980s was a time of color: pink, purple, blue, green, yellow and orange eyeshadow became popular. This look included colored eyeliner and mascara, and bold, bright lip colors like red, pink, and orange. Eyeliner was applied to the top and bottom of eyes, and bushy eyebrows had a comeback.

In the 90s, flawless, clear skin was favored, paired with natural colors of makeup: burgundy, brown, and purple lipstick was most popular, which were usually paired with a dark lip liner. Thin, dark eyebrows and minimal eyeliner were the go-to.

The 2000s were all about vibrant blue eyeshadow with frosted pink lip gloss, and thin eyebrows with a defined arch. Mascara was paired with the blue eyeshadow.

The 2010s saw a rise in full coverage foundation and contouring. This involved bronzer and highlights on the cheekbones and high points of the face. Smoky eyes and nude lipstick was the preference, and fuller lips became popular with lip fillers growing in popularity.

Although we're fresh into the 2020s, experts predict that we'll go toward skincare products rather than makeup. Multi-use products that work on the eyes, lips and cheeks save time in the morning, and the full eyebrow has come back.

It is expected that makeup will get more colorful in the 2030s, with emphasis on bright eye makeup and nude lips. We'll have to wait and see.
