Easter is here! Whether you're religious or not, everyone can get on board a holiday with mascots that are fluffy bunnies and teeny chicks. To start off your Easter the right way (with a dose of serotonin before all those chocolate eggs do the job for you), here are some photos of impossibly adorable bunnies and chicks to make you smile. If you'd like to see some more adorable photos of animals, have a look at these clingy pets who love their humans and siblings (maybe a little too much).
When you think of Easter, the first thing to pop into mind are bunnies, chicks and chocolate Easter eggs. But how did these adorable animals become associated with a religious Christian holiday?
The tale of rabbits laying eggs came to America from German immigrants who told a folk tale of Osterhase. This hare laid colored eggs, and children would put out nests for the hare to lay its eggs in. These eggs were eventually made into chocolate. Another association is due to the fact that rabbits mate like...well, rabbits, and Easter is a celebration of Spring, fertility and new life.
The tradition of decorating eggs at Easter dates back to the 13th century. An explanation for this is that during the Lenten season, it was forbidden to eat eggs. People would decorate eggs and wait till the end of Lent before eating their tasty eggs.
