Moving from one school to another one is always a huge step. It's never fun to be the new kid. What's even harder is moving from one school to another one in a completely different country. Now, not only are you the new kid, but you're the new kid with a new accent and a new culture that you suddenly have to become the representative for.
Americans and foreigners have an interesting relationship. Firstly, a lot of Americans consider everyone to be a foreigner, even when they are living in their own country. Sometimes it can be difficult to move past stereotypes when trying to learn about someone else's background. It is a good thing to celebrate other people's cultures, and ask them questions with an open mind, but we need to understand that sometimes people just don't want to share.
Reddit user u/aoifecassidydublin recently moved from Dublin, Ireland to a southern US state. She expressed that she has not had an easy time adjusting to the new school, or rather, her new classmates have not been able to make her feel as though she belongs.
Her new teacher wants her to do a presentation on Ireland but she has no interest in doing so after other students have continuously made fun of her nationality. Now she is asking if she is 'the a-hole,' because she doesn't want to put on a show for her class.
