Parrots are amazing birds! Each individual parrot is unique in his own way. Their beautiful feather coats come in all sorts of color mixes and varieties. Parrots are often kept as affectionate pets and can also be found in nature. Their life expectancies vary from around 10 years to over 50 years depending on the specific parrot species!
Mrs P here is a very special parrot indeed. She was recently accepted into an animal therapy program at her local hospital. At over 40 years old, Mrs P knows a thing or two about making people happy.
You are probably wondering, how does an animal become a therapy animal? Well, it is different in every hospital but at Mrs. P's hospital the process went a little something like this. Mrs. P was first signed up for a screening evaluation where she was held, pet, and had to nicely take a treat. She did not have to be perfect for the screening process, but rather show that she had the capacity to deal with people and a suitable temperament. Her owner reports that she passed this screening with flying colors!
After passing the initial screening, Mrs P and her owner had to then take a 6-8 week course where they learned about how to work within a hospital setting, etiquette around patients, and how to read animals.
With a smile and winning personality like Mrs P's, we trust her to do her job and offer excellent therapeutic services!
As of now, Mrs P has yet to take on any patients. Her owner must do shadowing with a therapy team before she is able to start doing actual patient visits. We wish Mrs P the best of luck on her therapeutic journey and will certainly reach out to her if we ever need a little parrot therapy.
