Grandma's and their grandchildren usually have a very special relationship, separate from their parents. Usually, it's a bit sweeter because it's not usually the grandparents who do the punishing. But not all grandparents are perfectly sweet and kind to their grandchildren. Sometimes they refuse to understand them and don't respect their wishes because they are 'stuck in their ways'. Personally, I've always found this to be a very weak excuse, the idea that old people are incapable of learning new things, it's simply not true. There are 70-year-olds going back to school to get their second degree.
Reddit user u/aitamumissues shared her experience dealing with her mother's relationship with her daughter. Every family has issues, but sometimes it becomes dangerous to leave two family members together, especially if one is supposedly 'in charge'.
Things can get even more complicated when race get's involved in family issues. Some families have very strong opinions on race or very passive ways of addressing it. Either or can be quite dangerous when it comes to understanding the experience of another family member.
