There's no winning with some customers. If there's anything that working retail teaches people, it's to never expect decency or understanding out of another single person. Is that too harsh? Nah. When there's people like this scheming rotten salad lady walking around, there's no question why customer service can take on an adversarial tone. Let this be a reminder to treat retail workers with kindness- they have to deal with Karens every day, and it's not an easy job to take on.
My time in retail was long enough to understand that there are people who are always going to be impossible to please, and they enjoy making it everyone else's problem. But, if there's anything you learn from working in retail and food service, it's that the customer can't always be right, but you do have to pretend that they are. If you're an aspiring actor or actress looking for a paid practice opportunity, look no further than retail or food service. It's like acting all day and pretending to be a person who isn't bothered by Karens like the one discussed below.
