Twitter Thread: Finland Attempts To Save Reindeer Using Reflective Paint

  • 1
Light - Cullen Dudas ... @cullend TIL in Finland they use to have about 4,000 reindeer/ car accidents a year so they paint their antlers with reflective paint and this is vaguely terrifying macl 1:09 AM · Jul 11, 2021 · Twitter for iPhone 49.9K Retweets 5,300 Quote Tweets 322.6K Likes

Had we not read these tweets, gone to Finland and saw this happening for ourselves, we definitely would have thought this is a dream - some magical creature that we had the luck of coming across. No wonder everyone is comparing these pics to Patronuses from Harry Potter. This truly does look magical.

Font - Antti Seppänen @se_antti ... Replying to @cullend Finnish person, originally from Lapland here. I can confirm this is true (though one of the images is fake). Reindeer antlers are also the fastest growing bone in the world (up to 2cm and 0,5kg per day), and they drop the old & grow a new pair each year. 1:47 PM Jul 11, 2021 - Twitter for Android 316 Retweets 13 Quote Tweets 6,715 Likes

Thank you for this - the confirmation and the explanation. The only thing that truly worried us about the whole painting the antlers thing is whether it would be hurting the reindeer or not, so knowing that it does not harm them makes this whole thing much better.

Font - Nick Donegan ... @aliarsfourth Replying to @cullend Definitely a real thing! Very cool. These Reindeer Really Do Shine, And It's For Their Own Good It's not Rudolph's nose that's red. Herders in Finland are experimenting with reflective paint on their animals' antlers and fur. They hope to reduce the 4,000. 8 npr.org
