Tumblr Thread: Cats And Their Weird Bread Addiction

We love cats, let us preface with that. Now, because we love cats and own cats, we feel like we can safely say that cats... cats are sUch weirdos sometimes. Not only do cats sometimes have the most random bursts of energy, start running around the house, and destroy everything that comes into their path, they also have some weird habits. 

Cats' strange fascination with laundry is one of them. Another one is cats' eternally weird obsession with human food. And the latest example is specifically cats' bread addiction. Not every cat has it, but the ones who do... they will do anything to get it, even if it means stealing it right from under your nose. Oh, and yeah, it's hissterical.

    Font - flrstperson Follow One of my cats was rescued from outside. l'd only ever had a super polite cat who would come up and sniff food and then be like "can i have this?" So when this other cat came up I was like oh you wanna sniff the bread right? Here it is so you can sniff it.

Cats are batshit for the taste of yeast, to the point where it's used to flavoUr kitty food. I also read that MOST breads should be safe in small quantities, but other types (like garlic or raising bread) can be dangerous, and raw dough is a big no-no. So! PSA!

    Font - What's really, really important to know for kitty health is that cats should only ever be given nutritional yeast. Brewer's yeast or the yeast you use to bake bread is really deadly for cats and is a no-go. The difference is that nutritional yeast is dead - other types of yeast used for cooking are live cultures. The problem with live yeast is that it produces alcohol as a byproduct of digesting sugars, and alcohol is toxic to cats (and dogs) in pretty darn small quantities. Pets generall

    Font - I don't personally recommend feeding bread or starch products to cats, but most research seems to indicate that ingesting a little bit of fully cooked dough that doesn't contain any other ingredients that are toxic to cats (e.g. garlic) is probably not going to be harmful. If you have a cat that really likes to bread or you're worried your cat ingested any raw dough or live yeast, please contact your vet. 89,893 notes
