Existing as a woman in any space can be enough to cause anxiety. A lot of women never feel 100% safe regardless of their location and should never be judged for having their guard up. However, that doesn't mean we can treat every single person we approach as 'potential predators.' If you find yourself feeling uncomfortable, there are about a million ways to handle things, but usually, the best thing to do is remove yourself from the situation. We can't really imagine a scenario where confrontation would be the smartest choice.
The woman in this r/AmITheAsshole post decided today was her day to act exceptionally entitled on a public bench, growing angry at Redditor u/ladyatstop simply for sitting on the other end of the same bench at her while they waited for a subway to arrive. It really doesn't sound like the original poster here did anything that should have caused concern to the woman on the bench — he even repeatedly promised he wouldn't bug her, said he just wanted to sit after a long work shift and put his headphones back on when she told him to move — but the other person seemed extra angry as she walked off.
We would love to know exactly what was going on here, but alas, the internet only provides us with one side of the story, and this guy didn't deserve to be treated poorly for sitting on a bench in the general vicinity of another person.
