People in IT get some tall orders, especially when they're trying to help the kind of people who think that smoke is a feature of their device. Not only do they have to contend with people who have no idea what they're doing, but occasionally they also have to deal with other IT professionals who also don't know what they're doing. That's the kind of situation Redditor u/edhands posted to r/TalesFromTechSupport, detailing a bizarre scenario in which they were introduced to a new IT colleague named "Fred" after a company acquisition. "Fred," management decided, needed specific configurations for his computer — but the specifics he asked for genuinely weren't possible. When our original poster noted that the specs involved couldn't work together, he was dismissed by management and did the only thing he could — set it up the way it was asked of him and have to re-explain that the computer wouldn't work with "Fred"'s demands later in the week when the computer didn't work properly.
Seems like some basic stuff for an IT professional to understand; we can only imagine the OP's exasperation when they realized nobody would listen to him until they actually saw the computer setup wouldn't work. To continue down the rabbit hole, here are some IT memes for the people really holding up society as we know it.
