Usually, being an independent contractor - especially in an office - is considered a negative thing. You're usually exempt from the only positive aspects of a salaried position. `099 employees rarely receive health benefits, 401ks, and overtime - those are luxuries. Hiring independent contractors is essentially a way for employers to avoid the expenses of a full time employee. The practice is getting called out, especially on sites like the r/antiwork subreddit. Despite this negative connotation, one clever Twitter user has shared a perk of working on contract.
Being an independent contractor sucks for a lot of reasons, but it also affords you the unique ability to tell people to f*ck off in delightful ways. pic.twitter.com/KQJv4KrBBg

See, according to @BirdRespecter, being an independent contractor affords a person the unique ability to tell people to f*ck off in delightful ways. He goes on to share an exchange with an uptight employer who tried to enforce his presence at their morning stand up call. For those who aren't aware, a stand up call is a short meeting that is generally held while standing - a meeting that is actually designed to be uncomfortable to keep it short. Basically, they're annoying. And @BirdRespecter wasn't keen on attending a short call that happens at 6am their time.
In the conversation that @BirdRespecter (Caleb) shares, the manager informs him that going forward, morning meetings are a requirement for employment at their company - and that they expect him to be on the next call.
This received a commendable "sucks for you" response from our protagonist.
When the manager tells Caleb he needs an attitude adjustment - and that his absence from further meetings would result in his firing, he stands his ground. His contract says that they must pay him through the 18th of the next month. So basically, he's going to be asleep and dreaming while this inane stand up call takes place.
Caleb then shared a pretty perfect meme about the matter. The power is all his.
To provide context, our hero shares that this person is just middle management trying to flex their power. This is pretty common even when you're a salaried employee just trying to get through work.
The memes continue.
This is where @BirdRespecter shares the time difference - which makes the request for him to be up at six in the morning even more ridiculous. A short meeting isn't worth waking up at such an ungodly hour.
Caleb used his last update to remind people to advocate for themselves if they're being treated like garbage (or in a precarious situation) at work. It's a sentiment that everyone should agree with and keep with them throughout their lives.
