Savannah never has to beg her Dad to go out for a walk. That's because after they wake up every morning, walking is all they have to do! Tom Turich is a world explorer who left his home seven years ago in an attempt to walk the globe. He started in New Jersey and worked his way through the United States for four months until he reached Austin, Texas. That was where Tom met Savannah– who was still just a puppy.
From Texas, the pair crossed down into Mexico, with Baby Savannah riding in the back of Tom's cart. As she started to grow, she'd spend more of the day walking alongside Tom. Eventually, she became strong enough to walk for entire days, covering some 30-plus miles at a time! By now, the pair has covered more than 22,500 miles, and they're finishing their trip with a walk back across the United States, from Seattle to Tom's home in New Jersey.
Recently, Tom did a Reddit AMA to answer some questions about his and Savannah's journey, and it's no surprise that most of the questions were about Savannah. She and Tom seem to be inspiring people worldwide to get out with their dogs and spend some time reflecting in nature. Maybe crisscrossing the globe isn't for everyone, but Tom and Savannah's trip has proved the old adage: it's not the destination, it's the journey. In honor of their trip coming to a close, we put together our favorite pictures from their trip and our favorite questions from Tom's AMA for you to enjoy! Just don't show your dogs, they might get a little jealous…
This is a picture of Savannah in the hills above Kas, Turkey, a seaside village on the Mediterranean coast. Tom talked at length in the AMA about how much he and Savannah loved Turkey, and how could you not with a view like that! He also commented that the country boasts easy access to freshwater (from wells, public fountains, etc.) and that the Turkish people were incredibly hospitable, always willing to invite Tom and Savannah in for a meal.
One of the most interesting tidbits of information in Tom's AMA was his admission that he didn't plan to walk the globe with a canine companion in the first place. Still, after a few months of camping and getting spooked, Tom had to think of his safety. He borrowed an idea from our ancient ancestors– the ones who first domesticated wolves– and found Savannah to give himself some peace of mind. From there, the rest is history.
