An employer reprimanded an employee over text message after reviewing the CCTV and seeing them sitting down during their shift. The employee has chosen to take their skills elsewhere.
Today we're revisiting this sensational post that took r/antiwork by storm. Their boss messaged worker u/hestolemysmile via text. After reviewing security footage and catching u/hestolemysmile sitting down at work, the boss sent them disparaging comments. The issue was u/hestolemysmile had two broken bones in their foot and had already cleared the modification to their duties with their direct supervisor.
It's unclear why this employer is using CCTV to monitor productivity in the first place. While it might feel like it has an immediate effect on productivity to come down hard on 'lazy' workers using this method, the actual result is a loss of faith in management from your motivated and high-producing staff. Over time, blanket demoralization from such practices will further lead to poor staff retention and hiring, which hurts your productivity and bottom line.
This post has two parts: the original text messages posted to r/antiwork and their follow-up post from the following day. Both are included to add more context to the situation and are indicated by their respective titles below.
