There's a new Batman in town and to the delight of millions of millennials, he's emo, brooding, and a little bit weird. Matt Reeves' The Batman is the pulpy noir that fans of the Caped Crusader's iconic Detective Comics era have been waiting for. Mask of the Phantasm has always been my personal favorite Batman feature, and for me, Reeves' take on Gotham and the inner world of Bruce Wayne is the closest a live-action blockbuster has come to achieving the sort of stylistic world-building that Mask of the Phantasm did so well. I know a lot of people might disagree, but I think Robert Pattinson was perfectly cast for the role of world's greatest detective. But enough about Batman. Today I learned that the guy playing Penguin was Colin Farrell this whole time?? Apparently the Irish hunk's makeup and was so convincing, even the cast didn't recognize Farrell on set. His charm managed to shine through all those prosthetics, because fans can't get enough of Penguin, and networks have taken note. HBO has already ordered a spinoff of The Batman that will focus on Gotham through the eyes of Oswald Cobblepot. Then there's Catwoman. Zoë Kravitz managed to make Selena Kyle feel relatable and sexy at the same time—a refreshingly human version of Selena Kyle, rather than just a one-note femme fatale. When she said "I can take care of myself," I believed her.
