Every once in a while, we come across stories of modern-day heroes. People who come together, selflessly, to rescue an animal in need, an animal who would have been lost without them. They are stories like that of the horse and pony who were stuck in mud for 18 hours getting rescued with the help of the people around them. Stories like that of a whole community coming together and building a four-story scaffolding platform to rescue a cat that's been stuck in a tree for three whole days. They're stories like those of people in Ukraine rescuing their cats in the midst of bombings and chaos.
Sometimes, we can do it alone. Other times, it takes a village. And, in today's story that was published by tapwoodcarving on imgur, it was a mix of both. The whole community did indeed come together to try to rescue a kitten that was stuck in a storm drain, but it ended up taking one incredibly heroic man who crawled through 40 feet of pipe to finally get it to safety.
"This is the happy story of Mr. Binks, a solid black kitty who had a rough start.
Local social media had alerted the community to two days of mewing coming from a storm drain in a residential neighborhood. It was mid-summer and we get flooding rains in the summer. This was an emergency. I packed up my kitten-rescue gear and headed over."
"When I got there I was informed that the police had already given up and the fire company was about to.
We could hear the poor thing in there, but he was so scared he kept running down a connecting drain pipe every time someone climbed down to fetch him.
Once the professionals gave up, we tried the basket with some of the super stinky gooshy food in my kitten rescue kit. No joy! Mr. Binks would get in the basket just to check it out, but would not stay in it long enough to lift him up. We did not want to risk him falling out of the box half way up."
"Enter this badass! (Consent to post on social media obtained)
We realized the only way we were going to get this kitten was to trap him in the section he was in - so this fine gentleman climbed down a neighboring inlet and crawled through about 40 feet of pipe to trap the kitten.
Once the kitten was in the basket, we used a pool net provided by another neighbor to prevent him from jumping out of the basket as we raised it up.
This was a group effort. We had several families that alerted the community to the situation, several families that stopped by to offer water, assistance, and advice/ideas as we worked the problem, and ultimately three families that directly contributed to getting this little void out of the trouble he was in. Solid animal community!"
"He was dehydrated, way too thin, and unsure about his new surroundings. I had to rub a little food on his lips to get him interested, but once he got a taste, he went to town."
"But he was still a little wary - even after an hour or so of being in a warm, quiet, safe environment."
"But oh, when he found out how warm we were…"
"And oh when he found out how how nice our cuddles made him feel…"
"He decided it was ok to be a kitten.
Listen to that boy's motor!"
"I just had him overnight and it was a wonderful honor to be his introduction to humans. I had already lined up his short stay in foster care (just to fatten him up a bit) and because his story got tons of play on local social media sites, he was adopted very quickly - within a week of getting out of the storm drain.
This was our last cuddle before I took him to his new home.
Congrats, Mr. Binks!"
