Trust should be the foundation of any healthy relationship. Be it with a life partner, a friend, a family member, or your pet. Trust allows us to feel safe in the relationship, both mentally and physically. It takes a lot of time, energy, and dedication to build trust and maintain it, sometimes even years. But the worst part is that it only takes a split moment to break it all down. And that's exactly what happened with the hero of today's Reddit thread.
After 7 years of living together, the author was harshly attacked by their own dog. We won't spoil too much because both the thread and comment section provide context and excellent advice, but nevertheless, it is devastating. If this was a new dog they just recently adopted, then it would be a whole other story. But because they have so much history, it's a bit harder to accept and move past. But harder does not mean impossible, and that's the most important takeaway from this. Now it's all about being patient and working to rebuild that trust.
"It was bad. She started snarling her teeth. I backed away, but she ran for me & gave me multiple puncture wounds on my arm, wrist, & elbow. I had to go to the hospital to get the wounds cleaned (no stitches) & a tetanus shot."
Oh gosh, this must have been so traumatizing, especially coming from your own dog.
"…found out she had an ear infection. She has been treated for that & we just started with a behaviorist. We are doing the right things, but I am terrified of her now."
Ear infections can become agonizing for dogs, it's great that you are working with professionals to get this resolved. The last part does break our hearts a little though. We wish you both luck!
