The Met Gala has long been Twitter's favorite opportunity to express disgust over the frivolities of the wealthy, and last night's 'Gilded Age' event was no exception. Celebrities flocked to show off their shockingly expensive fits (and lack thereof) at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's fundraiser, and the keyboard smashing couch-sitters were more than happy to offer up their memes, reactions, sartorial takedowns and general commentary.
One of the overarching themes of the criticism focuses on guests' apparent inability to follow through with the night's theme. The Gilded Age was an era that extended from around 1870 to 1900 - a period of staggering economic growth thanks to industrialization. It was also a time of major inequality, which led to many labor movements and social initiatives, some thanks to the very monopolies and trusts that formed due to the era's technological advancements and booming economy. While that same gap between the wealthy and us poors is always evident during the Met Gala, it seems most of the glitzed-up attendees barely took the theme seriously.
This particular tweet had us in the first half, not gonna lie.
Ouch.
Some users even mocked themselves for their theme-related anger and takedowns.
One of our least favorite looks came from Kylie Jenner, who made the choice mistake of wearing a frilly, white monstrosity complete with a backwards baseball cap (????) and veil.
There's no denying it's impressive that Kim Kardashian managed to wear this historic and unaltered dress of Marilyn Monroe's (courtesy of Ripley's Believe It Or Not), but we're wondering (again) how it applies to the Gilded Age. There were also critics who found it disrespectful for Kardashian to don the gown. At the end of the day, we just think it falls a bit flat.
Amy Schumer opted for a Gabriela Hearst ensemble that inspired some pretty critical (and funny) memes.
Emma Stone caught a lot of flack for her curious choice of dress - which is serving ‘Budget Black Swan Prom’ more than Gilded Age.
Men's attire at the Met Gala always seems like an afterthought - and there were quite a few memes about that.
Perhaps Bad Bunny would have benefited from, like, a regular suit.
Blake Lively, like her or not, sported an impressive Versace gown that was actually inspired by architecture.
"I've patinated," Lively told LaLa Anthony during Vogue's live stream. "This dress is an homage to New York City and so many of the classic, iconic buildings." She showed off some of the dress's subtle references: "This is detailing from the Empire State Building, some of the draping from the Statue of Liberty...(and) the constellation from Grand Central Station."
It seems most people recognize the gown's success.
Genesis Suero understood the assignment.
This look (sported by Dove Cameron) was definitely our favorite of the night.
Lizzo's fit is a close second.
