Pretty much anyone who has ever lived has thought to themselves at one point or another that people can be real dicks. For all that we exist in a highly individualist society, there's nothing that a significant minority enjoys more than picking on people who they mark out as different in some way.
This is a pattern that starts in the rote learning pressure cooker of school. As every former weird kid can testify, other children are often merciless when it comes to taunting their peers. It's crazy how something as minor as what you have in your lunchbox can lead to years of merciless teasing, but it still happens.
It's got to be hard to stand by and watch this happen to your kid as a parent — but it can be even harder to try and help them with the situation. For @DylanAdler6, his mom decided that the solution was a literary one. He recently went viral for sharing a book of "Insults & Comebacks" that she had given him when he was struggling with being bullied in middle school. The excerpts gave Twitter no end of amusement, even if they might not always prove the most useful when you're about to get swirlied. It's the thought that counts, right?
