This woman told her very successful niece she has the potential to be just like her daughter and is completely oblivious as to why that was rude.
She posted her story to this thread on Reddit's r/AmITheA**hole subreddit and despite how she dressed up her side of the story, it was pretty obvious that she did, in fact, overstep. Firstly, her niece is a hard worker who went to an Ivy League school (not that this is a measure of success by any means) and who got an impressive job at a government agency. She also has a partner with a great job as a lawyer (again, not a measure of success but certainly goes to show that this young woman has plenty going for her).
Clearly, her aunt is jealous deep down. Her daughter did not go to as strong a school and got her job through a family friend. Her daughter getting married first is literally the only thing the aunt could possibly think of that her niece doesn't have yet. And why should her niece rush? She's clearly in a stable relationship and on track to have a great career. Our takeaway here is that the original poster clearly has messed up priorities or some kind of chip on her shoulder. She likely resents her niece's accomplishments compared to her daughter's and is leaning on "settling down" as the true measure of success to feel better about herself. Yikes! Send this woman back to the fifties!
