Wherever there is something that someone could possibly do in this world, there is someone out there taking it way too far… This is a phrase that I have uttered in the intro of these threads more times than I could possibly begin to count — but it remains as accurate and as relevant as ever.
Some people just take something and run with it, we humans consistently fall prey to this due to the logical fallacy of feeling 'moreish': if one of something was good, then one more will be even better. But, as we continue having one more and one more, the law of diminishing returns applies, and each one makes us feel just a little bit less good than the last one did. The novelty has worn off, and the dopamine release decreases; the effect we feel is something like that of an addict building tolerance and closely follows the law of diminishing marginal utility.
The only thing we can do at this point is try something new (scary) or double down on that thing that we already know we like and that is already giving us satisfaction. So we do it more, and more, ignoring the fact that doing this thing that we love now makes us feel dead inside.
This is how fanatics are borne, and fandoms and stans along with them. These people, over time, because of the effects described above, have built their identities around these things and have left themselves nowhere else to turn to. Sunk cost fallacy takes hold: They can't back out now, and all they can do is sink further into their fandom and gatekeeping while raving ravenously about Taylor Swift on Twitter or spending the entire weekend in front of the tele to catch the football.
Relating this back to the thread at hand (I don't expect many of you to still be reading this anyways), that's what this teacher has done here. She has taken the thrill of discipline and absolute power too far, turning the reasonable authority that it was borne from into a twisted game. It's appalling, to be honest, and it's hard to believe she didn't lose her job for this.
