'Company got caught lowballing me': Director mistakenly CCs applicant on shady post-interview email
Interviewing for jobs can be such a thankless experience. In this day and age, it's almost guaranteed that hundreds of people are applying for the same gig that you are - and if you know anything about statistics and probability, the odds are (generally) not in your favor. Unless you're a nepotism baby, of course. But for the rest of us, it's hard knowing you might not be a company's top pick, or even their third, for that matter. But the last thing you want is to actually witness a conversation about how you rank - and how likely you are to accept a lesser wage.
This is exactly what happened to Redditor u/Komeandgo, who shared a screenshot of a very damning email with the r/antiwork subreddit.

The screenshot of the email reads as follows:
"Here is a candidate that my Team likes as an alternative to [redacted] if he does not work out. is looking for 55k-60k. She lives in [redacted]I think she would accept 53k. She has committed to a second interview with you. I am sending over her resume."
As OP later explained in a comment, they were “accidentally cc’d in the email, which is hilarious since it was for an IT role.”

After u/Komeandgo's story gained popularity, she decided to update her new fans on the situation.
"I didn’t expect this post to get this big so I just wanted to answer questions a lot of people are asking. I completed an interview with a team of 3 people. 2 SysAdmin each in charge of their own individual office and 1 IT Director. I would’ve been in charge of my own office as well. We discussed pay and I said my minimum was 60K (I was already leaving an entry level job in the same field so lower wouldn’t have been beneficial). That’s why when I saw this email I was caught off guard. The salary range wasn’t listed (but was not 55k or less on Glassdoor) and they never communicated pay directly to me just said “ok” after I told them my minimum. This was my first time seeing a potential offer.
I went to the second interview and just told them I saw the email, they apologized and told me they’re embarrassed etc etc. I told them I feel they wouldn’t have my best interest at heart if they’re already undervaluing me and that I didn’t want to continue forward with a team that’s likely to stab me in the back. HR sent texts asking me to continue forward and called me apologizing and saying “that’s not how they do business and if that was them they would be pissed” but I think that was more damage control and the other person declined. I told them the fact it was offered by who would be my boss means they would not be looking out for me if I took this position. And I also said it speaks volumes about the company that HR is apologizing on the Director’s behalf.
The city that I live in is very high cost. You can barely afford a room on 53k. In-person jobs were extremely hard to fill because everyone wanted something remote. This job was 4 days on-site with an occasional 5th day on-site for meetings.
I’d had interviews where they communicated up front saying I don’t want to waste your time or mine, the job pays x amount, does that work? I would say yes or no and we’d move on or negotiate from there.
Shortly after this interview I took an offer for another job that pays me more than 60K. But I was just laughing about this today and figured I’d post it here.
TL;DR: Interviewed and didn’t know I was going to be offered under my asking salary until I was CC’d in an email."
