When you think of animal intelligence, what are some of the first animals that you think of? For us, normally, the first animal we think of is the dolphin. Dolphins are incredibly smart creatures. They're quick learners, they have self-awareness, they express an amazing range of emotions. Really impressive. We also think about crows. Crows are known for being insanely intelligent. They're capable of using tools, they recognize humans faces, they have really interesting skills. But one animal that we keep sort of forgetting about… is the octopus.
Octopuses are also incredibly intelligent, but you know what they also apparently are? Vindictive jerks. Yeah! We've heard stories before of octopuses being jerks to their caretakers, but we never fully believed them. Until today. This video of an octopus punching a fish - for no reason - is indeed the final proof, both of octopuses' intelligence and their a-hole-ry.
You know, when we scrolled past this tweet, we did not, in fact, think that we would spend entire minutes of our lives staring at a loop of a video of an octopus punching a fish. But that is exactly what we ended up doing, and considering how much we laughed at it, we have no regrets whatsoever.
Seeing this made us wholeheartedly buy into all of those stories about how octopuses sometimes escape their enclosures just to show that they can, or how they toss food that they don't like back at their feeders, and just about everything else. We think that we have offically found one of our newest favorite animals.
