'And they think $7.25 an hour is a living wage': Local Florida restaurant hypocritically roasts people who take 'government handouts', while blatantly advertising their toxic work culture

One Redditor, u/AffuoFlow, recently sought to unveil the hypocrisy of his local restaurant by revealing the passive aggressiveness behind a large sign posted outside the establishment. On the handwritten sign, the restaurant asks their patrons to be patient with their staff, attempting to be empathetic and supportive of their employees to the face of the public. However, when you read between the lines of the message, it reveals how toxic this work environment must be.

Naturally, this sort of pettiness is completely uncalled for when waltzing into a restaurant for a lunch burger and some fries. Sure, we understand that you want people to be patient with your current staff because they are probably working very hard (likely for marginally livable wages) and probably have to deal with a handful of upset patrons. That's just customer service baby! But the commenters take it a step farther, digging into the real meat of the problem with this sign. Camellia Street Grill is basically roasting minimum wage laborers for not wanting to return to their 60-hours-a-week-for-no-money jobs, but behind the scenes they themselves happily accepted “government handouts” when it was offered to them.

One user, ironically named u/BeKindToEachOther6, did some digging on the public Federal pay website to find out if Camellia Street Grill was taking government money as well. It turns out, they took over $162,000 to keep their business afloat during the pandemic that was subsequently forgiven. So what's so different about the “free money” that the Grill took advantage of over the welfare checks that they're claiming laborers are living off of instead of working? Not only was everyone pissed that they're being a little hypocritical about government aid, but the commenters are also up in arms about the fact that this sign is RECENT.

It's 2023 and businesses are still using the excuse that people are lazing about at home living large on free cash (which is a tap that has certainly run dry), while the rest of the workforce is happy to go back to work. That's just not the case. In fact, tons of people are refusing to go back to minimum wage service jobs because the work environments are toxic (point proven with Camellia Street), pay isn't that great, and quite frankly, they're just considering how they can make more money so that they can finally stop having roommates by the age of 40. So to respond to Camellia Street's passive aggressive sign, it's not that people would rather sit at home and get handouts, your main problem is that you don't treat your existing employees with enough respect and pay to keep them around long enough to give a crap about your business.
