Weekly Internet Roundup: MrBeast Stays Controversial, A New Day for Twitter, and the Badness of the Good Doctor

Greetings, it's time for another edition of the internet roundup. We've got a nice controversy to meme to news ratio this week, which makes for a pleasant change. It's a bit Twitter heavy, but hey, we've got to squeeze those last drops of content out of the place before it becomes irrelevant. Anyway, here's some things that people have been talking about. 

Algorithm Anti-Jesus Strikes Again

MrBeast is a strange, well, beast. He basically creates content that kind of is like baby sensory videos for people with a reading age, and and somehow makes massive acts of generosity seem like the most demonic thing possible. His latest viral stunt has been to allegedly help 10,000 deaf people to hear, restarting accusations of him producing inspiration porn for profit. 

His charitable actions may well do some good, but they are also used to drive his fortune and fame. Pretty sure there are rules in several religions about this kind of thing, but that isn't going to stop the discourse cycle. Or the dude that is prompting it, for that matter.

We Are All Surgeons Now

If parts of the internet were anything to go by, most would assume that the only television people watch nowadays fall under fandom cash grabs, reality shows, or whatever breathlessly reviewed prestige series HBO craps out next. But no! Cable TV is still a thing that not only exists, but draws in millions of viewers! There's a whole wild west of programming out there that flies under the radar because it's primarily watched by old people who don't usually share the opinions on social media about that kind of thing. They wouldn't find time for the unhinged political posts otherwise.

The Good Doctor has unexpectedly been turned into the meme of the week, after numerous clips from the ABC medical drama sparked reactions and discussions on Twitter.The highlight undoubtedly has to be the dramatically overacted ‘I am a surgeon’ scene that was subject to the kind of meme life cycle in 48 hours that would have taken weeks to mature a decade ago.

The general outlandish terribleness of the show has encouraged plenty of lively argument as well, including its portrayal of autistic protagonist Dr. Shaun Murphy, and his apparently unstoppable need to to misgender or be racist towards his patients. Because, y'know, no social skills or something. 

Elon Steps Down As Head Unfunny Sh*tposter

After many, many months of doing the billionaire equivalent of Sideshow Bob repeatedly stepping on rakes, Elon Musk announced yesterday that a new CEO has been chosen for Twitter. Are we finally at that day I dreamed of for so long, where I am no longer obliged to expend any energy talking about Apartheid Clyde? Probably not, but it will be interesting to see who is willing to take up the poisoned chalice.

Musk has confirmed that the CEO will be a woman, former Head of Advertising at NBCUniversal Linda Yaccarino. Let's hope that this inspires the current head honcho to be less annoying in the meantime (not that this is going to happen).
