Jay worked at a bookstore and claimed that he wanted to get some of these books appraised as a "surprise gift" to the Redditor. That's what he said, anyway, after he was caught red-handed with her books without her permission.
When the Redditor confronted Jay and demanded to have her books back, he had the audacity to refuse. That's when things got a little ugly. Long story short: OP called the cops and Jay's workplace, an officer showed up and forced Jay to return the books, and Jay got fired. Now, he's demanding that OP help him out monetarily while he looks for work. Seriously? Who does this guy think he is?
