Do you remember a time before air conditioners? I do. Well, I remember a time before I was acquainted with them. Living in both New York City and St. Louis can be brutal. The mugginess, the heat, the stickiness and the crankiness that come with them. Back in the day, all we had was a whirring fan, popsicles and cold showers to keep us cool. My mom would put ice cubes in sandwich bags and toss them to our little whining hands, a brief respite from melting in our living room.
Eventually, my parents succumbed to the pressure or could finally afford an air conditioner. But just one. In their bedroom. To keep everyone cool, they invited us in for sleepovers that consisted of us sleeping on a comforter-padded floor. Most people would balk at sleeping on the ground, but my parents made it fun. It sure as hell beat the alternative: Tossing, turning, and sweating our lives away in a stuffy room.
This summer, I'm acquiring a few second-hand air conditioners. But I'm not abandoning my trusty fan. Nay, she lives outside in the backyard, providing a much-needed breeze when there isn't one. These fan memes are for her, and the rest of the world's fans who keep on truckin' and cooling humanity down.
