It's wild to believe that The Lion King Broadway musical is one of the most profitable things the Disney Corporation has ever made. Think about it: the musical has made well over a million dollars a week every week on Broadway since 1997. That's not counting the various touring productions happening all over the world. No Disney movie could make that kind of money, even if they were in theatres indefinitely. To be fair, tickets to Disney movies aren't $200 a pop, but you get the picture.

The Lion King musical has been performed on six continents, in countless languages, and to millions of Disney fans worldwide. I have a theory about why it's by far the most successful Disney Broadway musical: it's one of the few of this genre that adds something to the original source material instead of hastily reproducing the animated movies with live actors. The puppetry, the sets, and the additional music all make for a magical experience that could only happen in the theatre.
