Barbie comes out next week and fans are beaming with excitement. The only place where people are wearing more all-pink outfits is probably a Taylor Swift concert. Everything is Barbie right now (and Oppenheimer, but that's a different story…)! People are so excited about the Barbie movie, you can't just give all the credit to the film's PR team—Barbie has a long cinematic history and many fans have been devoted to its "lore." And every fandom has its super fans that kind of ruin the experience. The fans that call you out for not knowing one itty bitty detail that is probably insignificant, but you didn't know it, so you can't call yourself a "real fan." Unfortunately, women experience this all too often in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) from entitled men who think action-packed comic-based films are a man's world. How many times has a woman heard, "Do you not even know no the basic lore?! Oh, I get it, you're just here with your boyfriend, right?" Or been shutdown as "not a real fan" because she likes Iron Man more than Spider-Man, or something dumb like that? We'll tell you how often, too often.
So one Barbie fan on Twitter has suggested we now approach the Barbie fandom like those types of man in the MCU. "'You're just like meee!'…'You're just like me?'… Do you not even know no the basic lore?! Oh, I get it, you're just here with your girlfriend, right?" If you're going to see Barbie next week, you better have also seen the 2004 classic Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper. And, god help you, you better know who Bibble is!
