Behold: one of the greatest examples of malicious compliance ever told. This Grandma's commitment to stubbornness is truly unmatched.
Back in the 1950s, things were much different than they are now in almost every way. Back then, stereotypical gender roles were in full force, with women getting married, having lots of children, and running a household while raising the kiddies. Meanwhile, the man of the house would work a job. That's it. But that was considered the men's responsibility.
Back then, you could actually raise a family on a single person's salary, even if it was pretty low pay. These days, us 20 and 30-somethings all work multiple jobs so that we can afford to live with a roommate or partner. It's grim to think about. You basically can't live anywhere in the US on a minimum-wage salary these days, and even if you have a good job, you still might wind up living with your parents (like roughly half of millennials are right now).
Back then, women had much less freedom, and their husbands were able to control basically every aspect of their lives. However, that didn't mean these women were powerless — just the opposite, actually. If their husband's word was law, these women would obey the law and make their man live to regret it.
