Taking leave from your job is important. For one thing, a bit of time away can give you more headspace, meaning that when you return, you're feeling fresh and invigorated, ready to bring new ideas and approaches to your role—or it can just mean you return with your hatred for your job freshly invigorated… If that's the case, it's a good sign that your current role and duties aren't a good use of your time, and it's time to do something else.

But, it would be more surprising if, after time and space away from your role, you returned resolved to make the best of things… only to find that your boss had made the decision to terminate you in your absence. Of course, there's nothing ideal about being blindsided in this scenario, but at least it would be for the better in the long run because an organization that pulls something like this is not a place where you'd want to work.
