When you first meet your spouse, you have no idea A. that they are going to end up being the love of your life and B. what your relationship with their family is going to be like. Will you get along with their parents? What about their siblings? What about their sibling's partners? It's like playing Russin Roulette; you never know when the trigger is going to go off. I remember the first time I met my ex SO… I had no idea that his mother would be so bitter towards me down the line. He wanted to move with me an hour's drive away from his place (this was a long time ago, back when I was in my early twenties) and she FLIPPED. I'd thought she was pretty cool up until the point she began calling me names. Did I do anything about it? Nah, I was too respectful of her, plus pretty chicken. But other people wouldn't have taken so kindly to her behavior.
