Company demands employee take on coworker's workload after she quits, employee refuses without a pay raise, only to be denied: ‘Let's see who breaks first’

Seeing who breaks first me or work, after I asked for a payrise to reflect extra roles/responsibilties, they said no ofcourse. So i told HR and my manager id only perform to the letter of my contracted roles from now on.

As the title says, im hoping. i can outwait work for a pay rise but i will provide some context on why: Ive been given a few extra roles/responsibilities outside of my contracted ones recently from a girl that left om her own accord due to finding another job.

Work decided not to replace her. At the time i expressed id like a pay review if im expected to do more, they said sure we'll look at it do what we need to do and the outcome was a meeting today, in which they said no payrise would be given on the grounds that it falls within amd is directly correlated to 2 of my exsisting roles.

I said thanks but no thanks ill only do what my contract states and im not interested in the extra work for the same pay.

There was some back and forth, nothing nasty... more corporate and proffesional but it was a tense encounter.
  • 06
They pulled someone else on my team in to do it instead, thank god she has a set on her and told them the same thing.
  • 07
Now work are stuck as they will need someone to agree to do it for the same pay, pay me or someone else extra or hire someone else.

Now the waiting game begins to see what they do!

Carry_Impossible The only way to make more most of the time is to find something similar somewhere else. I have some buddies with. 20 years at company's that the PTO every week is too good to leave but their pay is way under competitive wages. Weigh the pros and cons before of course. It happened to my dad. Company got sued for who they replaced my dad's wages with. The owner came back to my dad later on after snd now pays him a good wage to do work for him.

OP OK_Bottle_8796 I have looked elsewhere but options are limited right now and work isnt bad enough to make the commute seem worthwhile for something else! Glad it worked out for you dad in the end! Thats the outcome im crossing my fingers for!

TheSean_aka__Rh1no Yer, OP, they never need you as much as you think. Companies can and will hurt themselves to hurt you, so don't think you've calculated where a red line might be. It's time you leave, and I'd bet that's what they're working towards. I know I sound harsh and absolutist here, but look at it this way, if the company respected you and the work you did, and were at least competent enough not to jepardise their operation by upsettting you, they never would have asked you this bullsh

OP OK_Bottle_8796 Absolutely i agree, they'll cut their nose off to spite their face and ive put a bit of a target on my back in doing what ive done, i know that! In telling them im not doing extra without the extra pay, Ive rolled the dice and im prepared to accept the outcome. A calculated risk if you want to look at it that way.

CyborgHeart1245 They'll fire you both, then hire third employee to do both of your work, for minimum wage

OP OK_Bottle_8796 "Performance improvement plan" incoming? I wouldnt be surprised
  • 15
Carry_Impossible You will be okay. You are doing the right steps. Just hang in there. Don't burn the bridge like I did and have to go to business and business to try to sell myself for employment. I got my dream job out of it but the pay isn't what I wanted it to be.

OP OK_Bottle_8796 I hope so mate i have looked tonight and there is work going in my closest city for very similar job roles, its just a 35 minute one way trip so adds alot of time onto my day im just not willing to do right now. Obviously i will if i have too though! There is also plenty of warehouse work if i need something to put me on but hopefully it doesnt. come to that

12baakets You don't have to tell management that you're working within your contract.

    Employee holding out paycheck

OP OK_Bottle_8796 It felt like i had to stipulate in the meeting out loud that i am infact more than willing to perform my contracted roles as best i can, that way they can never use anything against me in terms of refusing to work etc etc.

Duke_Built I'd give you a raise based on you picking up her slack and not needing to hire a new person. I'd ask for at least 25% bump, no less.
  • 21
OP OK_Bottle_8796 Thanks dude i picked up her 2x most critical tasks, to keep things ticking over, so i did think i was in with a really good shout of pickkng up extra money, actually convinced myself theyd be like "yeah sure it makes sense so here is a few quid"

TheSean_aka__Rh1no I like it, you've weighed it up and braced for the outcome. I wish you good luck, and commiserate that it's all happening at this time of the year.
  • 23
OP OK_Bottle_8796 Absolutely, ive started window shopping and put together a contingency plan for if things do start to go south, but im confident it wont come to that! Thank you for the good luck i appreciate it!

Lakewalker_ca Is 35 min really that much more than now? Like you'd not work a better paying job if you had to travel that? Just asking as i'm curious as | work in industrial so that's a normal time for most places. Of course i'm in Canada and we have to travel a lot to get anywhere, and the places i work don't have public transportation so you have to have a vehicle. Not counting the extra 10-15 minutes extra time for travel in the winter. And i save 10-15 minutes since i have a garage so i don'

OP OK_Bottle_8796 Not really a big difference but its the knock on effect of the rest of my life, for example, having to leave the house approx. 20.mins earlier so now my kids have to get up earlier, then id have to pay for extra after school club for my kids and they're now getting in later. so extra childcare costs also extra fuel costs due to further traveling. its a big family change overall for such a small distance, something id have to carefully consider doing before making the switch! se

SeraphymCrashing This is exactly where I am. I could make 30% more money doing less work if I went somewhere else. But everywhere else also offers garbage amounts of time off, and I am grandfathered in on an older plan and get 6 weeks of PTO plus 9 holidays a year. I make enough money to be comfortable, so the time off is more important to me. I need to start calling my senators and representatives and tell them that a 4 day work week is becoming my number 1 priority.

DavidisLaughing If I know anything about corpo they will hire someone from outside the company to do those roles while paying them more than what you were asking for.
