Plus, TikTok's premier food reviewer calls out preferential treatment.
Good day, avid users of the internet. It's that time again where we take a look at some of the headlines on social media this week. As usual, the topics that have caught our limited attention spans are all over the place. Let's begin.
When the Trust Fund Pays For a Good Ring Light >>>>
Remember Fitzroy Garage Party? A few months back, a bunch of Australian dudes were clowned on for the eponymous video in which they totally had fun in a jazzed up storage unit for TikTok, exuding privilege as they did. Well, great news: there's a British version of it now.
A bunch of smugly-moustached, pint-toting geezers put on their best ‘I’m not being filmed' faces for a ten second clip that has become inescapable over the past few days. Many viewers were skeptical that those in the video were really enjoying themselves as much as it was it claimed, as well as being quick to mock the whiff of gentrification around the whole thing. Let's not try to guess how much those beers cost.
Keith Lee Calls Out BS
Following hot on the heels of the 48 oyster date debacle, Atlanta's food scene has stayed controversial after an altercation between one of the internet's most esteemed restaurant reviewers and another one of its local restaurants.
MMA fighter turned TikTok darling Keith Lee visited the city with his family not too long ago, and naturally he took it upon himself to film some content while he was there. One establishment he chose to review was The Real Milk and Honey, who ended up not getting the boost in business that they were probably hoping for.
Lee used much of his review to acknowledge the preferential treatment he appeared to get from the restaurant when they knew who he was, as opposed to the extremely long waiting times imposed on his wife and family. His viewers were not pleased, and the defensive statement that the establishment released didn't go down well either. Bowing to clout isn't always going to get you places.
Susi's So Crazzzzzzzy! Love Her!!
In other tangentially food-related news, a lifestyle influencer called Susi on TikTok recently shared a pesto recipe. Starting her video with the statement “Call me crazy, but I've never liked store-bought pesto”, her forced attempt at quirky engagement-baiting has snowballed into a full-blown story time stitch phenomenon over the past few weeks.
Users of the clock app have been using this introduction as the jump off point for gossipy stories that are really crazy. It's not like most of them need much of an excuse to share their personal drama, anyway.
Iconic Meme 🤝New National Holiday
Doge is without a doubt one of those few memes that reaches historical status. It's almost a wonder that it's taken this long to dedicate a whole day to it, but that exactly what took place yesterday. For the first time, the city of Sakura in Japan celebrated Annual Doge Day. Honoring Doge model Kabosu's 18th birthday, the event was organized by online Doge fan community Own The Doge. It's nice to see a meme bring about a sense of togetherness in the real world for once. When are we getting the Goatse equivalent?
That's everything for now. Have a nice weekend, and take reading this as your sign to log off for a little while (OK, maybe I'm kidding on that last point). See ya!
