Weekly Internet Roundup: Omegle Ends, Face Tattoos, and Bored Ape Eye Damage

Here we are again. We're approaching the end of another working week, and that can only mean one thing: we've got to look at some of the viral stories that have captivated the internet in these past few days. Cheerfully enough, we're going to be dwelling on a lot of death and mutilation. This would have made a great Halloween edition. Anyway, let's begin.

No More Talking to Strangers

So long, Omegle. No longer will the weirdos and predators have an easily accessible place with which to terrorize overly curious preteens. The anonymous chat website officially shut down on Wednesday night after fourteen years of operation, leading to some mixed reactions. It seems like the main people who are going to miss it are those nostalgic for the early 2010s, and the YouTubers who mined it for endless content. You wouldn't get that amount of flashing on TikTok, that's for sure.

Blind Apes

I wasn't aware that anyone still cared about NFTs anymore, but apparently I was wrong — a whole host of their fans recently suffered yet another embarrassing failure, made even worse by the fact it was health related.

A host of Bored Ape collectors attended the yearly ApeFest in Hong Kong earlier this month, and many of them left this gathering with damaged eyeballs. The reason behind this was because the wrong kind of UV bulbs were used onstage during a presentation, leading attendees to complain of eye pain and vision loss.

Needless to say, the less sympathetic corners of Twitter wasted no time in making a joke out of the whole ordeal. Nothing will ever top being able to screenshot their precious investments, though.

RIP Paint Grandpa

It's got to be a pretty strange feeling when your beloved family member's legacy boils down to being a meme and popular Halloween costume, but the relatives of Paint Grandpa have dealt with it gracefully. We were given yet more sad news late last week, when Paint Grandpa, real name Bobby, was revealed to have passed peacefully in his sleep at the age of 91.

His granddaughter Alex put out a  touching tribute video, that led many of those who were touched by his 2019 viral moment to bring out tributes of their own. Rest easy, legend.

The Girl With the Kevin Tattoo

The award for Rage Bait of the Week is a no brainer, and it goes to the woman who supposedly got her boyfriend's name tattooed on her forehead. TikToker @anastanskovksy gained millions of views and reactions for her documentation of getting ‘Kevin’ inked in large cursive where everyone could see it.

It's no shock that most people thought this was a dumb idea. While rumors are now swirling about the ink not being as permanent as claimed, the stunt still packs a punch. The internet loves some regrettable body modification.

Culture is Saved

In less morbid news, gamers and cinema connoisseurs alike have been given something to look forward to recently. After years of waiting, GTA 6 has been officially confirmed with a rumored release date as soon as December. As if that wasn't enough, a leaked resume belonging to an NBCUniversal intern appears to show that Shrek 5 is also in the works. Isn't it nice to have something to look forward to on the run up to Christmas? However each of these turns out, they can't be worse than the Barbenheimer movie.

So ends another week online. Who knows what the next arbitrary period of time will bring? I'm sure we'll find out soon enough. Bye!
