'I want you to give it to me': Top Choosing Beggars of the Week (August 23, 2023)

One of these days, it'd be nice to step into the shoes of a real-life choosing beggar. Before you judge me, hear me out. As someone with very little audacity, it would be a fulfilling experience just to walk in someone else's shoes for a day and feel entitled to everything I wanted. I'm not saying I'd like to live like this for the rest of my life. If I did, I'd probably end up alone, embittered, and with no friends. However, just for a day, I want to know what it's like to walk into a room and feel like I can demand something ridiculous. 

 

This week's top choosing beggars certainly have some of the audacity I'm talking about. Some of these examples include a woman who wants to bring her significant other to a bachelorette party, a parent who wants someone to watch their toddler for just over $3/hour, a "famous DJ" who demanded a higher quality free bottle of champagne, and a guy who wanted to take someone else's place in line.

Okay no there's still confusion here, I got the okay from but was told to ask you if it was okay I didn't know if there were more rooms or not so if there are shared rooms with us all he isn't coming therefore I'd be sharing. Also what time is the party Saturday morning SR As long as your partner isn't with you, you are free to share a room with the girls. If you bring your partner, you are free to get your own room.     Font - Free Champagne not good enough for some... MEDIUM I live & work in Ibiza. In the summer of 2000 I was working for a particular club and to help with promotion of this club, we had some of the DJ's from our club night play at a local popular bar. These "pre-parties" were a great chance to promote your event and sell tickets. Part of the role of your headlining DJ's was to make an appearance at the pre party, usually to play.

    Font - So one day, we had a pre party and a particularly famous DJ that I hadn't met until that moment was there to play. I introduced myself and asked if he wanted anything, he said he was hungry, so I got him some food and whatever he wanted to drink. He proceeded to play and then some friends of his showed up to say hi and socialise.

    Font - It was at this point I thought that it would be a really nice way to show our appreciation for him playing, but also to help with entertaining his friends, that I decided to bring over a bottle of champagne. He didn't ask for it, but I thought it would be a nice and appreciated surprise.

    Font - As soon as I brought it over, I said thank you for coming today, it's been a pleasure etc etc. He took one look at the bottle of Moet Chandon in the ice bucket (opened and ready to pour) and instead of saying thank you, he just said "Have you not got anything better than that?" There was a pause of silence.

    Font - I wasn't sure what to say, so my young brain just said "It's free" because here's me on minimum wage not understanding the concept of turning away a bottle of free champagne, something I'd never even tasted at that point in my life. He responded: "Obviously it's free, but I don't drink that I can't you bring me something better?"

    Font - So I had to go back to the bar and give back the bottle and then proceed to bring back a bottle that was 5 times more expensive and give it to him. He didn't say thank you or even really acknowledge the bottle or me. He just took the bottle and started pouring it for his friends. To this day he is still the rudest "celebrity" I have ever met.

    Font - Next time get up earlier LONG TL;DR a CB wanted my place in line. Years ago when my wife and I were young in our careers (broke as ), our oldest boy's only Christmas wish was a laptop computer. This was way out of our reach financially, so I had been looking everywhere for a good deal on one. I found an ad for a Radio Shack holiday special selling a pretty decent laptop for under two hundred bucks in their Black Friday sale. This was at the time an incredible price.

    Font - I went down to the Radio Shack and chatted a bit with the staff, to find out what to expect and how many they had. They admitted to me that they only had one, and that they only had one or two of their other door buster items. They opened at five am and the guy I chatted with recommended that I arrive early if I wanted it.

    Font - Okay, maximum effort. After our Thanksgiving dinner I took a turkey induced nap, and after we put the kids to bed I headed down to the strip mall mall with a book and a camp chair. I was the only one so I set up right by the door. It was after midnight before anyone else arrived, and people trickled in between then and about three am. Everyone was pretty chatty about what they wanted, at first I was the only one who was there for the laptop.

    Font - When it got closer to opening there were some different sorts of people showing up. Some trying to talk their way into line, buy a spot for twenty bucks or whatever. About four am a guy rolls up in a flashy car (some luxury brand, I don't remember), and comes straight to the head of the line with his Starbucks coffee in hand. He gives me a story about how his kid has cancer, and that kid's only Christmas wish was that specific laptop. I tell the guy "sorry, but this was my kid's Christmas

    Font - The guy keeps turning it up. He gets really mean and nasty about how selfish we all are that we don't want to help a cancer kid and gets right into my personal space. I keep telling him no and his tone continues to escalate. At that point I stood up, folded my camp chair, and told him "I'm just some guy without much money but I got up early enough to be first in line here. If my kid was battling cancer I would have been here even earlier, and I sure as have taken the time to stop for coff

    Font - I'd like to say everyone clapped, but mostly they just tried to stay out of it and look the other way. The guy just went to the end of the line and everyone else looked embarrassed. The nice chatty excited vibe was gone.

    Font - I could tell by the guy's body language that he was going to try to rush in and get what he wanted after the doors opened, but the Shack employees did a great job. Just before 5am they came out with a clipboard and went down the line, writing down our names and which door buster we were buying. Then they gave be a slip with the laptop model printed on it. They had all of the limited quantity items behind the counter and I was out of there with laptop in hand in about five minutes flat. Ne
