'Sorry boss, that's a managers job': Boss tells employee not to take on extra work, employee maliciously complies and boss's incompetence starts to show

Sometimes, bosses become so reliant on their employees' contributions that they don't even recognize how hopeless they'd be without them. This boss clearly became threatened by how much extra work her employee was taking on regularly, so the two had a meeting where the boss told the employee not to take on any manager's responsibilities. Normally, this would actually be great advice. There is no need for an employee to work that hard and not get paid extra for it. However, that's not exactly why the boss wanted to have this conversation. It's not like she had her employee's best interests at heart. Instead, she just didn't want it to seem like the employee provided more value to the company than she did because her manager was starting to notice things. 

 

Well, it turns out that this meeting was not the best way of resolving the issue. The employee, who shared their side of the story via this thread on Reddit's r/MaliciousCompliance subreddit, started to follow their boss's orders. Pretty soon, their boss had to keep asking them to do a few extra tasks, to which the employee would always reply that they couldn't take on any manager's duties. Eventually, the boss's manager became more and more clued in on this woman's incompetence and started to investigate their role at the company. Meanwhile, the employee ultimately moved on to bigger and better opportunities.

    Font - turned out she was visiting a friend who lived at the coast whilst she was meant to be on site! Someone accidentally let slip to her manager when he called in the incident and there was no one to manage, he asked me to deal with the incident.

Manager now talks to me directly and supervises me, he is helping me apply for a promotion Boss is on 'leave, pending investigation'

    Font - Edit again to answer people who ask why I would do bosses work in the first place? The residents still deserve support and to be given the best chances, if I can make that easier for them by taking on extra work I will. There is enough going on for people who come to us they don't need things being messed up because others don't want to do their jobs.

Everyone who has used services - you guys are great too, remember take everything one day at a time, and be super proud of yourselves every day.     Font - c0y0t3_sly What's funniest about this to me is that from a competent boss that IS good advice they don't need or want you doing their job, and they should be managing the extra tasks you take on not for their benefit primarily but limiting it so that you're doing the things that help your professional growth and interests if and where that's appropriate. 3.4k Reply Share

This is very true and I am absolutely OK with someone looking out for my best interests, my issue lays in that boss has been getting stick for her work and I think there has been given feedback to her boss about how much I do from colleagues and other agencies we work with which I guess has filtered down, hence trying to put down my work. 1.0k Reply Share
