What part of "time OFF" do these employers not understand? This technician had been working at the same HVAC company for 15 years and saw it expand from virtually nothing to a business that employed over 100 other technicians. Unfortunately, the dynamics within the company changed a bit after it was sold to a larger monopoly. Now, the technician's typical five weeks of vacation time were reduced to two weeks, and seniority didn't really matter at all anymore.
Despite these changes, the technician was still able to request the week after Labor Day. His request was submitted and approved well in advance, as this was always his go-to vacation time with his wife and family. However, over the Holiday weekend, there was a crisis at work and the technician's boss tried to get in contact with him to get him to come in. The technician turned off his work phone because he was on vacation after all, so his boss thought it was appropriate to contact the technician's wife. She shared her side of the story via this Reddit thread, and let's just say that she was unhappy to receive this phone call.
This toxic boss crossed so many lines throughout this anecdote. Refusing to honor his employee's vacation time was merely the first one. Using the technician's emergency contact information to get in touch with his wife was another. And then there's threatening termination if he didn't come to work. Moral of the story: if your boss pulls any of this nonsense, it's time to look for a new job.
