The interview process is unique because of the high stakes involved for both parties; the implications of ending up with a dud candidate can be disastrous for an organization or workgroup of any size, and a candidate ending up in a job that's not the right fit can be a huge misstep for them as well in their career. Likewise, the interview process is hugely resource-consuming for both parties, so wasting the other party's time with missed or rescheduled interviews and misleading promises or expectations is incredibly disrespectful. Plus, it's not uncommon that an organization is desperate to fill a role or a candidate is desperate for income.. so being ghosted or otherwise having the rug pulled out from beneath after weeks of process can be a huge setback.

This candidate shared how they were multiple interviews deep in the process when the company's HR representative called to ask them to have their references ready for the final stages of the process… before then adding that there had been a “mistake” on their part and that the role wouldn't be offering as much as had been advertised up until this point. Understandably frustrated, the candidate expressed their disappointment to the HR rep before turning to a popular online workplace community to share their feelings. Their thread sparked discussion amongst the community on the topic, with others sharing their experiences.
Whether it's intentional or not in this instance, it's not uncommon for some less-than-honest recruiters to use false promises in order to get candidates through the door, later attempting to gaslight desperate candidates into agreeing to lesser terms than had been originally advertised. The problem is, even if it's an honest mistake on the part of the recruiter, this tactic is common enough that there's no way the candidate is going to believe it. Even if they go on to accept the role, the relationship is already off to a rocky start, and who can blame the candidate if they continue to look elsewhere?
