Hi! This is my first time posting and honestly it's kind of an AITA post, and I've been feeling guilty. I rent the second floor apartment of a duplex, and I've been here for 3 years. As the title suggests, I believe it's my fault my landlord didn't renew the lease of my downstairs neighbor.
  • 04
My downstairs neighbor moved in one year ago, and was coming up on a lease renewal. I (27F) live above two men(60+M and his 32M son. When my new neighbors moved in I wanted to make sure to introduce myself, as we live in a duplex and share a lawn, basement, garage and driveway. I
  • 05
attempted to introduce myself 3 times and they refused to come to the door. I say refused because 2/3 times they were home (I could hear them and their cars were there). About a month after they were moved in, the 32 year old son left a note on my door asking me to ask the postal/Amazon delivery people to not leave the

packages on our porch by the door because he had stepped on them. At the time I was getting more deliveries than usual because it was the holiday season and I thought this was a reasonable request especially if he felt that they were blocking the entrance.
  • 07
I left a little sign out front of our front door asking for the delivery people to leave packages away from the door and left my neighbors a note telling them and introducing myself through the note. A couple weeks later I was woken up by my doorbell going off repeatedly in the middle of the night. I tried to ignore it but the ringing kept

continuing. I don't have a peep hole and my windows are kind of above the door so I was unable to see who was there, and I went to answer. Also my apartment was being rung, but the people were on the outside of the main door to the entrance of our building. It ended up being a group of men with the 32 year old neighbor. They all kind of

rushed in when I opened the door and they were laughing and pushing and it ultimately pushed me back into my apartment. I was pretty ticked off and left a note on my neighbors door the next morning asking them to never do that again. Within this month my neighbors also started smoking. They were

smoking marijuana every single day, and I think they were smoking out their own apartment because I am not exaggerating when I say I could smell it before I reached the front entrance door to our apartment. I don't care that much if people smoke, or being around smoke, but the amount they smoke in the

apartment has been nauseating. My landlord ended up calling me later that month. He told me that he was renting out the garage to the neighbors and that the neighbor preferred that I no longer had access to it.
  • 12
This frustrated me because I was never offered to rent out the garage and when I moved in this was marketed to me as a storage area for both apartments and was used as such. In addition, the garage is where our fuse boxes are and is the easiest access to our driveway and alleyway where we take out the trash. Ultimately I didn't

do much about this, as it was really my issue with my landlord than anything. As months went by my neighbor started also using the area of our basement where our washing machines are, for storage.
  • 14
I became really frustrated when my neighbor kept turning out our front porch light. I would go out front to walk my garbage around to the back and when I came back the light would already be turned off. He then started REMOVING THE LIGHT BULB! I would then replace the lightbulb and he literally caused the front light to be unusable

(he works in construction). I did not use this light often, not even daily, but I obviously relied on it when needed. In addition he was unreachable and refused to talk to me! Ultimately I had a conversation with my landlord where I expressed my frustration with the situation. In the conversation I also

mentioned the smoking. My landlord noted that it was against our lease to smoke in the apartment. About 6 months passed without much incident. Recently, though, the smoking increased once again. It got to the point where I could smell the smoke on myself at work,

and I was feeling really frustrated. My neighbor also started parking in a way that blocks the entire driveway and trash area. I think I messed up because when I spoke with my landlord recently, I told him about the smoking. He reached back out a week later to let me know that he would not be renewing my neighbors lease.

I feel really guilty because I do think it's my fault. I never ever wanted to cause my neighbor to ultimately get kicked out. I really was hoping my landlord would just talk to him since my neighbor wont talk with me directly. I don't know what I'm looking for here, I guess I just need someone to confirm that I'm in the wrong.

Most_Secretary1362 · 17 hr. ago You telling the landlord factual information about bad behavior is normal. They got themselves kicked out. Their behavior with the porch light alone was disgusting. As a woman that is a safety issue! You did nothing wrong. You owe them nothing.

INSTA-R-MAN 12 hr. ago Exactly this. I've had nightmare neighbors that the apartment manager did nothing about until several people also complained about the same things. We found out about their eviction after we'd found a better place and gave notice.

NefariousnessSweet70. 22 min. ago These people were not your friends, nor were they friendly. They did it to themselves.b

Feistyhummingbird 17 hr. ago You don't need to feel guilty at all. They walked all over you. I am surprised you didn't mention anything to the police or your landlord about the unlawful entry into your unit. Seems that would have been a reason for eviction. Make sure your landlord returns the use of the garage as was originally granted to you when you moved in. Also, get yourself a Ring or other doorbell cam so you can see who is at your door in the future.

patchshank 17 hr. ago They're being a oles. You did nothing wrong. He was the one violating the lease. Not you. Sounds like a nightmare of a neighbor tbh. Hopefully someone decent moves in now.

Mollykins08 17 hr. ago It was their behavior that got them kicked out. My guess is the landlord had a bunch of concerns about the neighbors, only some of which were related to what you said.

YoctoYotta1 16 hr. ago Don't lose any sleep over it. They crossed several lines and did it to themselves. It never fails to amaze me how selfish and inconsiderate people can be. Your feelings about the whole thing despite what you put up with are reasoned and noble, respect.

sndyro 16 hr. ago Wow. No....don't feel guilty. I would be glad they're on their way out. Being a good tenant and neighbor doesn't mean taking advantage of or being basically abusive to another tenant. I hope your next neighbor is more neighborly.
