I had a good interview with Company X, but they are in a location downtown with bad parking and the work from home option was only two days a week. These also didn't even validate my parking. The reason they wanted a second interview was because, the hiring manager said, the candidates were so close that they couldn't make up their minds.

They sent over a assignment that was actually a ridiculous amount of work given that I was not yet working for them: Put together a 10-20 minute presentation on this (real life) earnings report. I have done powerpoint presentations for conferences and meetings, it takes hours to prepare something really good. What this assignment says is, "Chicken Dinner, if you come to work for us, we will expect you to bust your ass overtime as the standard and we will not ever consider compensating you fairly

I mulled it over that weekend and then told the hiring manager the day of the scheduled interview: "I prefer to withdraw at this time. A second interview seems reasonable, but no test presentations. The assignment is requesting a great deal of free labor. Also, your company did not validate my parking at the first interview."

A few days later I was offered a job by another company that is fully remote and no hoops to jump through. I signed the offer sheet, and I start next week.

KristopherAtcheson • 17h Some companies do that. Sometimes outside ideas are better than the ones coming from the in-house ones. That's one way to get free labor I guess. Should be illegal, probably is in some states. ... 4730

Nuka_on_the_Rocks. 17h It is in ALL states. Reporting it to your states department of labor will usually get you reimbursed for the work. ... 4417

well duh. 6h I interviewed with a very popular modern banking company (rhymes with Slash App). For the tech interview, they offered me two choices: a take- home assignment where the interview itself would be discussing how I did the assignment, or just do the actual coding during the interview. I quickly opted for the latter, despite the recruiter telling me most people go for the take-home assignment.

I told them "Then I guess those people don't value their free time. I know what I'm worth." I did seemingly great in the interview regardless (according to the HR person afterwards) but was rejected due to the position having been filled before my interview and no one told the interviewer/HR to cancel. Whether that was true or not, very interviewing process all around. 4 7 ...

Hzglm3 • 20h Good for you. Preparing a 10-20 minute presentation is a lot of work, particularly as you want to avoid looking foolish as you don't know the company. Reply 242

Rough_Instruction112 15h ● I'd slap it together in 3-10 minutes and tell them it was an hour. Might as well test their (in) ability to validate how much time work takes so it's easier to slack off. 63 ...

svoncrumb 14h ● I once interviewed at a company that could not understand why I did not bring examples of my current work with me. Ummm. Because that's confidential IP there bud! Would you be happy with me taking your IP to if interviewing at another company. Crickets ... Got up and left. I didn't need to work for scummy people like this. Reply 433

Hand-Picked- 16h Thank you for having dignity. We need more people willing to take a hit, even, for their own self-worth, and for the united message that we are sick of being treated like garbage. If we ALL turned down every job, every underpaying position, every predatory company, they would have no choice but to treat us better. Imagine if people just 100% stopped applying to Dollar General, for example. Imagine how fast would change when they have to literally close stores because people won'

I_like_your_unit. 13h I did the same thing a couple months ago. I was interviewing for a (junior) data engineer role and they wanted to "test" my knowledge by having me do a 4-5 hour assignment building a database. I declined, saying that this is a junior position and that I should not be expected to be tested for my knowledge because obviously I don't have much experience yet and that this was not respectful of my time.

They replied that it was just for "training purposes" so that they would know how much training I required. As if they couldn't have done that after hiring me. I just didn't reply anymore. Absolutely never do any free work!! ... Reply 4 17
