"This was actually taken with a Google Pixel, My wife is also not a photographer by any means. It's not the most professional but it's still way better than what most shelters get. She has a ton of great photos she's gotten while she's worked there. She said the main thing is to have patience, also something distracting behind the camera for them to look at. I'm not sure of your area but any shelter I've been apart of loves having volunteers in general. My wife has used tons of pictures that volunteers took to post on their website/social media. She says a good photo will get any animal adopted."
