Typically when you accept a position, you and your new employer have agreed upon some set rules and expectations that neither party is meant to violate. In non-toxic work environments, we call this a contract. But in toxic work environments around the world, contracts tend to not matter to awful employers. When this happens, do not forget your power as an employee, even if you're a new employee, to stand your ground.
This thread was posted to Reddit by u/marora25, who was hired primarily as a receptionist in an office building. OP had negotiated with their boss and settled on shifts that would last from 7 am to 3 pm because those hours were the most suitable for the employee's health condition. However, as soon as OP arrived on the first day of work, they realized that this schedule would not work because the next employee would not begin their shift until 5 pm. Of course, OP was immediately pressured to stay an extra two hours, and when OP stood their ground, their boss was completely taken aback. You know, he was giving that kind of reaction that made it seem like no one had ever stood up to him before. Furthermore, OP was shamed for having to go to the bathroom because evidently, they were hired to be more than a receptionist; unbeknownst to them, they were really hired to be a security guard.
