It's hard not to want to be a bridesmaid at some point in your life. When you're in your 20's especially, it gets overly competitive to boast about how many wedding's you've been asked to partake in. Plus who can deny that two of the greatest rom coms of all time (Bridesmaids & 27 Dresses) revolve around the idea of just how crazy bridesmaid life can be. It's definitely an honor don't get me wrong, but as I get older I love the idea of attending a wedding with no strings attached. Hear me out.
The expense of being a bridesmaid has skyrocketed to the thousands. When you add up bridal shower expenses, bachelorette parties, bridesmaid dresses, shoes, hair and makeup, you've spent an amount that would have taken you on a nice European vacation. The time commitment is also intense. Not only are you expected to be everywhere early, but you're in so many pictures that you can barely smile anymore after half the day. And most obviously, you can't wear what you want. It's the bride's call and typically you don't get much say. I'd much rather select a cute cocktail dress from my closet and dance the night away in comfort than wear some hideous dress that I paid $300 for and still had to get fitted.
I'm sure when the time comes for my future wedding I'll be picky in selecting the bridesmaids dresses for my girls, but hopefully my personal years of bridesmaid trauma will keep me more level headed.
