If you're an overthinker, you'll understand why some of these designs look so weird. The designer created a design, then thought, "That's too basic, I should tweak it a bit." Then after the first revision, they thought, "Maybe I can add something else in." And after many rounds of overthinking, they've produced something that looks cool to them, but is illegible to the average person. The point of most signs is to be easily read at a glance. If the consumer has to stare at the print for a while to decipher what's being said, it's not nearly as effective.
