New manager fires worker for calling out sick: 'Best of luck'

You're going to get sick. It's just going to happen—even those of us with an immunity of iron are eventually going to catch a stray bug that puts us down for a couple of days. Undoubtedly, even when the business moguls of the world manage to replace us with a bunch of robots, they're going to be sorely disappointed when those robots have glitches, bugs, and viruses that cause inevitable downtime.

  • Yeah, you're going to get sick, so it's a little crazy that it's so common for so many bosses and employees to get unusually, sometimes uncharacteristically, vitriolic when their workers eventually need to call out. 

    It's not like calling out is fun for the workers either, enduring the blowback and attempts to coercion from their manager—just to spend the PTO they've been trying to save up for ages on a day in bed with a fever of 101 degrees Fahrenheit watching reruns of Judge Judy as they slip in and out of an uncomfortable fever dream. 

    All that, and sometimes your boss just turns around and fires you anyway, even if it's your first time calling out in ages… Just like this worker did after they called out after catching a virus, first being told that it was “no worries” before being told to check their email for notice of their termination.

    I worked there for two years. We got a new manager my last 8 months in. This was back in September. My work email had two write ups dated for the days that I called and a letter of termination effective immediately.

On the days where you were told not to come in, due to icy roads, it should not count as unexcused absences, since you were ordered to stay home, since the shop was closed. Use this information if they try to deny you unemployment. Just because you were absent for 12 days according to the schedule doesn't

And as far as the inclimate weather days go, the whole shop shared a group message through text. The manager would text that the road were icy and he wasn't going to be able to make it and asked us what our conditions were like.     sounds bad, won't try to defend it, but hear me out, I was never ONCE talked to about attendance, I have recorded of every day that I did not go to work. It was 12 total, not 14. I ended up calling out for 3 days with Covid in this instance, and there was another 5 days scattered in the beginning of the year where the roads were icy and the entire shop was told to stay home.. I called off a grand total of 4 times, but technically missed 12 days that year. Reply Share 12
